Un nouvel élan pour le soccer américain
La Fédération américaine de soccer (USSF) a annoncé ce mardi la nomination de Mauricio Pochettino au poste de sélectionneur de l'équipe nationale masculine. L'Argentin, qui était libre depuis son départ du Paris Saint-Germain en juillet dernier, s'est engagé pour un contrat de quatre ans.
Pochettino, 50 ans, possède une riche expérience dans le football européen, ayant notamment dirigé Southampton, Tottenham et le PSG. Il a notamment remporté la Coupe de France avec le club parisien en 2021.
L'arrivée de Pochettino à la tête de la sélection américaine marque un nouveau chapitre pour le soccer américain. Les États-Unis, qui ont participé à toutes les Coupes du monde depuis 1990, ont connu des résultats mitigés ces dernières années. Ils ont notamment été éliminés dès la phase de groupes du Mondial 2022 au Qatar.
Un challenge excitant pour Pochettino
Pochettino a déclaré qu'il était "honoré et ravi" de rejoindre l'équipe nationale américaine. "C'est un challenge excitant pour moi", a-t-il confié. "Je suis impatient de travailler avec les joueurs et de les aider à atteindre leur potentiel."
Le sélectionneur argentin aura pour mission de qualifier les États-Unis pour la Coupe du monde 2026, qui se déroulera au Canada, au Mexique et aux États-Unis. Il aura également pour objectif de remporter la Gold Cup, le tournoi continental de la CONCACAF, que les États-Unis n'ont plus gagné depuis 2017.
Des attentes élevées pour les États-Unis
Les attentes sont élevées pour la sélection américaine sous la direction de Pochettino. Les États-Unis sont l'une des nations les plus puissantes de la CONCACAF et ils espèrent faire bonne figure lors du Mondial 2026 à domicile.
Pochettino dispose d'un groupe de joueurs talentueux, emmené par des stars comme Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie et Tyler Adams. Il aura également pour mission de développer les jeunes joueurs et de créer une culture gagnante au sein de l'équipe nationale.
Seul le temps nous dira si Pochettino parviendra à relever le défi et à mener les États-Unis au succès. Mais sa nomination est un signe positif pour le soccer américain, qui espère vivre une nouvelle ère dorée sous la direction de l'Argentin.
