Portugal's Euro Adventure Off to a Soggy Start
Own Goal Frustrates Ronaldo and Company in Leipzig
Torrential Rain Dampens Hopes at UEFA Euro 2024
LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Portugal's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a frustrating start on Saturday as the reigning champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Czechia in Leipzig, Germany. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the Euro 2016 winners were left to rue a calamitous own goal that gifted their opponents a share of the spoils.
The match was played in torrential rain, which made it difficult for both teams to play their usual attacking football. Portugal had the better of the chances early on, with Cristiano Ronaldo firing wide from close range and Bernardo Silva seeing his effort saved by Tomas Vaclik.
However, it was Czechia who took the lead against the run of play in the 33rd minute. Vitinha's cross from the right was headed back across goal by Mendes, and Vaclik could only palm it into the path of Hranan, who slotted home from close range.
Portugal piled on the pressure in the second half but were unable to find a way through a resolute Czech defense. Ronaldo had another chance to equalize in the dying minutes, but his header went just wide.
The draw leaves Portugal in third place in Group F, behind Czechia and Spain, who both have four points. Portugal will need to improve their performance in their next match against Spain on Wednesday if they want to reach the knockout stages.
